AGM OF MID EAST REGIONAL AUTHORITY

REGIONAL GOVERNMENT MUST BE IMPROVED -JONES

Greystones based Councillor George Jones at the AGM of the Mid East Regional Authority (Meath,Kildare & Wicklow) in Naas Thursday night said “It was still very disappointing that little or no reform had taken place in Local Government” This Government with Mr Gormley as Minister for the Environment has issued lots of press statements on reform but has displayed no action.

Cllr Jones in particular referred to the weakness in regional government in Ireland, there is lots of work to be done in this area in particular with strategic planning for such items as Roads, Water, Planning & Development , waste, Tourism and Education. Whereas the Minister has the power to alter the functions of Regional Authorities Mr Gormley has taken the easy option by “doing nothing”

During the course of this year the Mid East regional authority along with the Dublin Regional Authority did prepare and agree revised Regional Planning Guidelines for both areas and the final document will shortly be published confirmed George Jones.

Cllr Jones handed over the Chairman of the Mid East for 2010-2011 to Kildare Councillor John McGinley
